Blue Jackets rookie returns to game after gnarly cut to face

During the second period of Game 3 of the Blue Jackets' first-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Werenski took a puck to the face while defending a shot by Phil Kessel. Zach Werenski also had a goal, and Nick Foligno added two assists. Instead of pylons, the Penguins center used Blue Jackets' defenders. They've only made it three times in their 17 years of existence.

Unfortunately for the Blue Jackets, staying healthy might be the most important part of this next game. So obviously, the chips are stacked completely in the Penguins' favor.

Game 4 is Tuesday night.

"You know what we're thinking?"

It's the first hat trick by Penguins rookie in the history of the franchise.

The Penguins will be looking to move on to round 2 tonight.

Johnson scored first for the Blue Jackets at 11:46 of the opening period when he launched a wrister from the right point into traffic that bounced off Crosby's skate and into the net.

Columbus outshot Pittsburgh in their first two playoff games, and the Blue Jackets had chances to win all three. Obviously scoring big goals but doing a lot of other things during the game - the penalty kill portion of it, the forecheck, the momentum. The Penguins look primed for another championship run, but wit would be nice to see the Blue Jackets slow them down a bit. Actually, the Jackets aren't stopping anyone. Throw that one out and there is still a case to be made that Penguins teams of the past lacked a killer instinct to put teams away. "I think the whistle (should blow), but it didn't". He was the backbone all season for a Columbus team that relied on him to steal them games, and more often than not, that's what he did. San Jose's quartet of 25-goal scorers in the regular season - Joe Pavelski, Brent Burns, Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture - have none so far in the playoffs. Bobrovsky sports a 2-7 post-season record against Pittsburgh. Of course, not all of this falls on him.

"No matter what period we're in, we have to have the puck more", Tortorella said. But in Game 3, Bob was shaky at best. Game 4 is Tuesday night in San Jose.

It's been nearly two months since the trade deadline, when we didn't know if Fleury would even be a Penguin this postseason.

After racing out to a 3-0 lead in round one - scoring three, four, and five goals respectively - it certainly doesn't appear that the Penguins are missing anybody up front.

Sergei Bobrovsky. The Blue Jackets need their star goaltender to step up in Game 4. Then he used his head.

He's done for the year, coach John Tortorella said.

Bradley Beal had 22 points for the Wizards, who got enough from their top players to offset 25 points from Atlanta's Dennis Schroder and 19 from Paul Millsap.

Werenski was hit in the face with a puck on Sunday night, leaving the game briefly to receive multiple stitches before returning to the ice. He scored with 2:27 left in the third period of Game 2 to give St. Louis the 2-1 win.

Hockey players: tougher than the rest of us.
