Why Michael Jordan didn't attend North Carolina's national championship win

North Carolina beat Gonzaga (where's that school again?) on Monday night, 71-65, for the national men's college basketball championship.

Joel Berry II led the Tar Heels with 22 points in the victory.

Gonzaga's Nigel Williams-Goss (5) reacts after the finals of the Final Four NCAA college basketball tournament against North Carolina, Monday, April 3, 2017, in Glendale, Ariz. This is the storied program's 6th national championship and 3rd under coach Roy Williams. And I said 'he hasn't called but guys, knowing him, he's going to say I went a year ago and you lost.' And so that's what I was thinking.

In 2016 in Houston, UNC lost in a thriller, succumbing to Villanova on that last-second three-pointer by Kris Jenkins.

With the game over, after the celebration the attention will soon turn back to the NCAA's investigation into UNC's astonishing scandal and the university's disgraceful response to same. Fans on both sides spent most of the second half griping about the officials' aggressive whistles. The Tar Heels drove the ball inside far more in the second half, getting easier shots, building up the fouls on Gonzaga and gaining an edge they needed to win.

"I told them don't worry about what the referee is doing, he missed a call [earlier], but my God, we missed four free throws in a row, missed layups". And now we know why. "But I'm hoping and knowing that perspective will come with time".

The final push came from UNC.

Despite the Tar heels being only 4 of 27 from 3-point land, North Carolina was able to control the painted area. An monstrous block by forward Kennedy Meeks led to an game clinching slam dunk by all-tournament performer Justin Jackson. That made it 70-65.

"I got questions after last game", Hicks said. Many have suggested he may be a one-and-done player. Williams-Goss finished with 15 points, but connected on just five of 17 from the field. Hicks had 13 points and nine rebounds.

Gonzaga, a Roman Catholic university in Spokane, Washington, emerged as a Cinderella team in 1999, reaching the Elite Eight before losing to eventual champion CT.

This year's run by Gonzaga was no fluke, with its only other defeat coming February 25 to BYU.

During their remarkable run, the Zags were ranked No. 1 in the nation for four weeks and earned a No. 1 seed in the tournament. In their first-ever appearance in the Final Four, Gonzaga got off to a strong start in the championship. After shooting a poor 2-14 from the field in Saturday's national semifinal victory against OR, many believed his ongoing injuries would hamper his play against Gonzaga.

Almost as shocking as the offensive struggles UNC had in the first half were the struggles of Gonzaga big man Przemek Karnowski.

"Now everybody has got social media, and we don't need The New York Times to find out what in the dickens is going on in our country", Williams said.
