Roger Federer beats Rafael Nadal in Miami Open final

35-year-old Roger Federer won his 91st career title on Sunday after he defeated arch-rival Rafel Nadal in the final of Miami Open. Nadal's recent performance will make him one of the favourites for the upcoming clay court tournaments, including the French Open which commences on 22 May. The Swiss champion believes that the break he had last season has helped him and that another period of rest is necessary to keep him fresh for grass and the following hard court season. "Physically and emotionally it has been a draining week, I think I did very well", he said. I will probably stay on hard courts for the next few weeks, then I will get on the clay two weeks before the French.

At 35, Federer, who is likely to return to the top five when new rankings come out Monday, looked fresh and energetic against Nadal despite playing a three-hour semifinal against Nick Kyrgios.

"I'm not 24 any more so things have changed in a big way and I probably won't play any clay court event except the French", he said.

"Wimbledon has to be the biggest goal now, in the near future, the American hard courts I guess as well". In addition, Federer notably missed the second half of the most recent 2016 season in order to fix his damaged body, which makes his latest title that much more impressive.

This is published unedited from the ANI feed. "It's been a very good two weeks for me".

Speaking after the win, Federer said: "The dream continues". I already played three finals this year, losing three times with a player that didn't lose a match.

AFP. I need a rest and time to prepare. Federer wristed a forehand crosscourt to save the first break point and snuffed out the second with a sharp backhand volley. "This is where it all started, in 2004, when you were a little boy that grew into a big man and strong man". Says Rafa: "I think I'm ready to win more titles". Maybe a wrong decision by me in that (break point) moment and I think it would turn quickly.

A sweeping backhand down the line in the final game summed up the confidence which poured from the champion from start to finish as he moved to an 11-match winning streak and improved his record to 19 wins and just one defeat in 2017.

"Then of course I am looking very good for the [ATP] Finals, for the year-end championships, where I have been very successful. You're too good not to".

Spending time with his young family is also a consideration said Federer, as well as the need to keep himself motivated.
