Eagles get defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan from Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens traded defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan and a third-round compensatory draft pick (99th overall) to the Philadelphia Eagles for the 74th overall pick in the third round on Tuesday.

The Ravens will move up 25 spots in the third round - from No. 99 to No. 74 overall - in exchange for a starting defensive tackle who likely was not going to get re-signed after this season. While that might seem like a positive move for an underwhelming player, Baltimore got fleeced.

Jernigan, 24, spent three seasons with the Ravens after being drafted 48th overall in the second round in 2014. Jernigan is coming off the best season of his career.

Baltimore could, of course, find a defensive tackle in the 2017 National Football League draft to take Jernigan's spot, or count on Willie Henry or Michael Pierce to take over his role.

Jernigan is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He will compete with Beau Allen to start at defensive tackle opposite Fletcher Cox with Vinny Curry and Brandon Graham manning the outside. In 2016, he played in all 16 for the first time in his career and started a career-high 15.

While the team's need for cornerbacks has seemingly overshadowed everything else on defense, the Eagles did lose two starting defensive linemen in a short span, cutting Connor Barwin and allowing Logan to leave.

Per ESPN's Adam Caplan, the Eagles needed to add depth at defensive tackle after Bennie Logan signed with the Kansas City Chiefs last month. With four Top 75 picks, the Ravens are in position to fill some key needs with impact players.
