Flyers goalie Neuvirth collapses in net without contact

Sunday might feature the National Hockey League debut of Mike Vecchione, the Hobey Baker finalist out of Union College who signed as a free agent with the Flyers earlier in the week. The Flyers are 5-16 in the last 21 meetings in NY, 1-5 in the last 6 meetings overall and the under is 4-1-3 in the last 8 meetings.

Neuvirth, then with Washington, was the opposing goalie when former Atlanta Thrashers goalie Ondrej Pavelec collapsed in his crease in a 2010 game.

"It's obviously pretty scary when you see your goaltender just collapse like that", the Flyers' Chris VandeVelde said in a between-periods interview. After laying motionless for several minutes, Neuvirth was able to get to his feet but was rolled off the ice on a medical gurney.

Later, the Flyers announced that Neuvirth was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital for observation.

Flyers Goalie Michal Neuvirth collapsed on the ice in the first period. Neuvirth was the goalie for the Capitals in that game.

"We sent him to the hospital for precautionary reasons, and everything so far has been good, " Hextall said Saturday, adding that Neuvirth will not make the team's trip to NY for Sunday night's game against the Rangers. There have also been no reports yet on whether he will remain in the hospital through Sunday or if he would be released.

He got to the bench early in the opening minute of play. He was not on the ice for warmups, still getting suited up.

He was an emergency backup in Philadelphia earlier this season when the Chicago Blackhawks lost goalie Corey Crawford to an emergency appendectomy hours before the game.

It is possible Neuvirth had flu symptoms that caused him to collapse. He ended up dressing for the game, but not for the goalie he thought he'd be replacing.

Hextall and others sitting in the Flyers' executive balcony boxes emptied out and went immediately to the dressing room. Defensively, the New York Rangers are allowing 2.6 goals per game and are killing 79.4 percent of their opponents power plays.

2 - Colin McDonald: In his first recall of the season, scored his first goal on his first shift.

Schenn scored his 17th power-play goal of the season at 7:28 of the first period after Claude Giroux's shot took a ideal carom off the backboard.

The Flyers had two power-play goals for the first time since February 28 against Colorado.

In Nashville, Filip Forsberg and Kevin Fiala scored 10 seconds apart late in the second period, and the Nashville snapped a two-game skid. He sat up before he was taken off the ice. The official description was an upper-body injury.

By that point the Flyers were enjoying a three-goal lead.

Jordan Weal added another PPG six seconds after the halfway point of the second, which ended up completing the scoring.

For coming in cold, Stolarz was excellent.

Cam Talbot finished with 16 saves. The puck was nowhere near Michael, who was in goal for the Flyers, when he suddenly passed out in the crease. Coach Dave Hakstol challenged the play, alleging offside, and was correct.

Stolarz, a Edison native, could see action with the Flyers' season on the line. Aside from Stolarz's heroics and Gudas' injury, there were scrums after almost every whistle.

The teams combined for 82 penalty minutes tonight (PHI: 40, NJD: 42), 44 of which came in the second period.

With the victory, the Flyers playoff chances are still alive, albeit improbable.
