Giants reportedly set to release Victor Cruz, Rashad Jennings

The Giants released Victor Cruz in a cost-cutting move that freed up $7.5 million in salary cap space. Even with that said, this is a player who tallied a combined 168 receptions for 2,628 yards and 19 touchdowns in the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

The former seventh-round draft pick has now played for three different franchises in his first eight seasons, and will likely still garner interest as a second-string veteran running back for some team in 2017.

He broke out in his second season, racking up 82 catches for 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns.

Obviously Cruz's body of work in the 2016 season might not inspire much confidence.

The Giants will report for offseason workouts in April.

In 2016, Cruz appeared in 15 games and had 39 catches for 586 yards and a touchdown, sharing the field with Odell Beckham Jr.

Cruz tore his patellar tendon six weeks into the 2014 season, and he missed all of 2015 due to calf surgery. Signing Cruz would be a major splash for the Ravens in free agency, but it could be a move that helps them better contend in the top half of the AFC.

Despite signing with NY as a undrafted free agent in 2010, Cruz had a productive career with the Minutemen - ranking sixth in program history with 131 receptions and seventh in receiving yards at 1,958.

Cruz told the Giants' team site he has "a lot of good football left ahead of me." But in the business of the NFL, Cruz's release was one we've seen before in the past and won't be the last popular player to get cut with similar circumstances.

"It's been an awesome journey", Cruz said in a team release.

Cruz has spent seven years in NY, and was set to make almost $9.5 million this season.
