5 circus performers injured during high wire practice

Emergency responders were called to Circus Sarasota near University Town Center around 12:43 p.m., ABC 7 reported.

Four of those injured are classified as trauma victims and were transported to trauma facilities, according to Sarasota County Fire Chief Michael Regnier.

The feat was performed flawlessly yesterday, according to Pedro Reis, founder and CEO of the Sarasota Circus Arts Conservatory.

Winston Simone, Nik Wallenda's agent emailed this statement to 2 On Your Side: "There was an accident while they were practicing".

The performers are part of the Circus Sarasota starring famed high-wire walker Nik Wallenda. The performers were practicing a "human pyramid" act when they lost their balance. The fifth injured performer was transported to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.

Wallenda's feats have included high-wire walks above Niagara Falls, between two Chicago skyscrapers while blindfolded and across Arizona's Grand Canyon.

"We had a bad accident here today", Reis said.

"I will tell you that the show must go on".

Reis said they will go to "plan B" and come up with a new ending, but said the show will go on. His great-grandfather, Karl Wallenda, slipped and fell to his death from a high wire in Puerto Rico in 1978. The circus people are resilient.
