Pentagon to buy 90 F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin

But Lockheed Martin acknowledged in a statement that "President Trump's personal involvement in the F-35 program accelerated the negotiations and sharpened our focus on driving down the price". It combines next generation characteristics of radar evading stealth, supersonic speed, and fighter agility with the most powerful and comprehensive integrated sensor package of any fighter aircraft in history.

Trump on Monday claimed that he had gotten the price of the F-35 down by $600 million, a drop analysts were quick to point out was in the works before his election.

The F-35A unit price in LRIP-10, including aircraft, engine and fee, is roughly seven percent lower than the previous LRIP-9 contract.

Lt. Gen. Chris Bogdan, F-35 program executive officer, called the contract a "good and fair" deal for taxpayers.

The F-35 program is Pentagon's most expensive weapons programme, costing about $400bn. And the F-35C variant's per-plane price is $121.8 million, or 7.9 percent below the lot 9 price. Deliveries are to begin in early 2018. In total, the F-35 program today plans to produce more than 3,000 aircraft with approximately 600 of those aircraft presently planned to be procured by worldwide allies.

Still, Lockheed maintains that they reached this agreement "in a matter of weeks" and that it represents "significant savings over previous contracts".

But the price per jet has been steadily declining as production increases.

Last week Defense Secretary James Mattis ordered a review of the F-35 program's costs.

Pentagon on Thursday reached an 8.5-billion-dollar agreement to buy 90 F-35 fighter jets from US largest federal contractor Lockheed Martin following President Donald Trump's involvement, said the company in a statement.

Wasting little time, the billionaire-turned-president worked swiftly before and after his inauguration to make sure that taxpayers got the best bang for their buck to reestablish America's military clout after eight waning years under the former Obama administration.

The contractor went on to add the deal will equip the U.S. Armed Forces with the latest flight technology, and create 1,800 new jobs at its facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

In total, the agreement saves $728 million, Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon said in a statement.
