Former Sprinbok player Joost van der Westhuizen dies

Regarded as one of the finest scrum-halves in history, he won 89 worldwide caps between 1993 and 2003, scoring 38 tries.

A meme circulating on social media following his death is urging all of South Africa to don a Springbok jersey in order to honour the legend one last time.

Van der Westhuizen, a World Cup victor in 1995, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2011 and bravely battled it while also raising awareness of, and funds to fight, the debilitating.

He captained his country for four years, including at the 1999 World Cup and retired with a tally of 190 points from 89 caps.

"#RIPJoost we miss you already", said halfback teammate from the victorious 1995 World Cup side, Joel Stransky.

His J9 Foundation released an update on his condition on Sunday, saying Van der Westhuizen was "putting up an incredible fight".

Born and raised in Pretoria‚ he was part of the South African team that emerged victorious from the 1995 Rugby World Cup victory in front of former President Nelson Mandela. He made a crucial tackle on New Zealand's giant try-scoring machine Jonah Lomu as his team went on to win 15-12 in extra time.

Former Springbok Toks van der Linde and TV presenter said on his Facebook page of his close friend: "In your prayers please think of the legend tonight". "As a player and person he was a warrior and a fighter".

There was no way he could score that try - there were four or five of us ready to take him into touch.

He spent his final moments at home‚ surrounded by all of his close family and friends.

"He was a fantastic rugby player and for me was the best nine I played against".

Marshall and van der Westhuizen were rivals throughout their careers and Marshall told the Radio Sport Breakfast he rates him as good as any opponent he faced.
