Person Of Interest In Karina Vetrano Murder Reportedly In Custody

Chanel Lewis left CBS New York

SEE ALSO: New video shows jogger before her muderAccording to NYPD Chief Robert Boyce, Lewis had been interviewed by police February 2 during their canvass of the area, but police had no evidence to arrest him.

Chanel Lewis, 20, was taken into custody at 6 p.m. Saturday, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce announced Sunday at a press conference.

Her father found her lifeless body face down amid towering weeds about 15 feet off the desolate path while helping police search for her.

Vetrano, a 30-year-old avid runner, was beaten, strangled and sexually assaulted on August 2 in Howard Beach.

Police said it does not seem Lewis knew Vetrano and that her death resulted from a chance encounter. When asked if the Worcester County District Attorney's Office was reaching out to New York City investigators about the Lewis arrest a spokesman for Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. stated, "Investigators follow every lead in the Marcotte case".

Police said that he was interviewed by detectives and made detailed confessions to the crime.

Police have reportedly made an arrest in the brutal murder of a Queens jogger. Previous DNA samples found on Vetrano's body couldn't be linked to suspects listed in databases of convicted criminals.

Investigators have recovered DNA from Vetrano's remains, but the sample didn't match any convicted criminal in NY or around the country. Lewis' DNA matched samples found at the scene.

"We've been in a state of shock for six months", Cathy Vetrano said.

Police were tipped off to Lewis from an anonymous 911 call reporting his suspicious behavior. It's believed he and Vetrano didn't know each other prior to the crime, police officials said. Phil found her body in marshland at the park just over three hours later. "She had the DNA under her nails, she had touch DNA on her back and there was more DNA on the cell phone".
